The Election of 1860 has led to a split in the United States of America. This has left two sides to the once united nation, the Confederacy and the Union. The south couldn’t support a president who contradicted everything they believed in. Abraham Lincoln was elected president on Nov 6, 1860. He was up against three other candidates all supporting the democratic party. This caused the democrats votes to be split between three people while the republican votes were only between one. After Abraham was elected the south had enough. They split into the confederacy.
Representing the republicans is Abraham Lincoln from Illinois. The democratic nominees include Stephen Douglas And John Breckinridge. There is also a constitutional unionist, John Bell. The constitutional union party consists of former whigs who wanted to prevent secession over the slavery issue. Lincoln ended up with 180 electoral votes, John Breckinridge with 72, John bell with 39, and stephen douglas with 12. This made abraham lincoln the clear winner of the election.
Lincoln's votes are mainly from the northern states and western state's and western state's. Stephen Douglas has won over Missouri and gained only 12 electoral votes. John Breckinridge, a southern democrat from kentuckky has gained his electoral votes all from the south. John Bell got his votes from a strip of state's in the mid east.
